Members of the 5arch executive team—CEO Shawn Miller, Chief Marketing Officer Michael Miller, and Chief Analytics Officer Tim Gannaway—along with a team of 5arch employees, had the honor of participating in A Walk on Water’s surf therapy event in Cardiff-By-The-Sea, California, on Saturday, November 17, 2018.

A Walk on Water (AWOW) is an incredible organization dedicated to providing surf therapy to children with special needs or disability. The organization’s events are centered around giving these children and their families a fun day full of love, laughter, and acceptance without any labels. Last weekend’s event was certainly no exception.

As the host of these exciting beach days, AWOW works with the businesses, volunteers, and watermen in local communities to bring the calming and therapeutic effects of the ocean to children who might not have had the opportunity to fully experience it before. At each of their events, this form of therapy is provided by expertly trained surf therapists.

Volunteers and supporters—like the 5arch team—assist in this guided surf instruction to create a perfect day where everyone is an athlete.

“It was truly a rejuvenating day at the beach for families—and our team,” explains CMO Michael Miller. “5arch is a proud supporter for this location, and we look forward to future events.”

Showcasing the absolute best of surf culture, Saturday’s events began at 8 a.m. and lasted until 4 p.m., with a plethora of activities enjoyed in between. Surrounded by the loving support of family and friends, each young athlete was able to take part in the ocean’s transformative properties and gain confidence, pride, and a sense of accomplishment from their thrilling walk on water.

Team 5arch watched as families bonded over this shared experience, many of them surfing together for the very first time. At the end of the day, each athlete was awarded a well-deserved trophy commemorating their accomplishment and a fun experience surrounded by those who love them.

Aside from the restorative surf therapy sessions, this rejuvenating beach day also included art, yoga, and music for everyone to enjoy, as well as a delicious breakfast, lunch, and plenty of healthy snacks thanks to donors and community support.

Since AWOW’s launch in 2012, it has held surf therapy events all across the United States, welcoming more than 1,000 families and providing the healing power of surf therapy to more than 2,000 children and adults in need. The incredible group is on a mission to reach 1,500 children per year by 2020, and we’re thrilled to see them strive for that goal as they bring smiles to children’s faces from coast to coast.

Donations to A Walk On Water go directly to hosting additional events in new locales, and bringing the wonder and fun of surf therapy to even more athletes in need.
